PUBLIC RELATIONS  BACKGROUND

A member of the National Union of Journalists since 1966, and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations since 1977 Ray has over 40 years experience in public relations and journalism.

Qualified in construction Ray has provided  public relations consultancy for a number of national and international companies covering a wide range of industries. While he has specialised in construction he has also provided consultancy to companies in the automotive, fire and security, computers, engineering, manufacturing, highways, health & safety, agricultural, professional institute, transport and related industries. A patent holder, he has worked with patent breakers and for clients in the retail consumer and DIY markets. A list at the end provides a sample of companies for whom he has worked.

Many companies have also been protective of their ‘local image’ and he has therefore extensive experience of working with the local, regional and national media.

As an ex editor of leading technical magazines he is familiar with accepting commissions and working with editors and journalists of a wide range of technical and other media. His articles have been published in a wide range of national and international publications. He always writes case histories and press releases with the ‘journalist in mind’.

He began his PR career when head hunted for the position of Public Relations Officer for the Sand and Gravel Association and devised and ran competitions, and advised gravel pit operators, on PR issues. He devised the ‘Plant a Tree for ‘73’ scheme which was taken over, and run nationally, by the Department of the Environment. He also assisted individual gravel pit operators when faced with PR problems. The role involved a considerable amount of reactive and pro active PR having to respond to the enquiries from a wide range of media.

He was offered the position of Associate Director of a leading London PR agency, John Addey & Associates. Among a number of accounts he was the PR consultant responsible for Osram GEC, Rockware Glass, Blaupunkt, Royal Scholten Honig Bv.

Ray’s international PR experience was gained when head hunted by a new engineering division of the Swedish multi national Sandvik AB, being established in Southern Germany; Coromant Engineering GmbH. As International Public Relations Manager, living in Germany and working with Sandvik’s 35 international offices, he was responsible for world wide marketing communications. This included, in many languages, PR, exhibitions, training programmes, technical print production. Major countries he worked in were throughout Europe, Russia, Chezoslavakia, Yugoslavia, Sweden, America.

As Managing Director of Quality Europe FM Ray was responsible for establishing and operating the Uk's first commercial radio station broadcast on satellite over Europe.

His knowledge of working for an international company, while living abroad, has assisted many previous PR clients with their international campaigns while operating from a UK base. He has also lectured at Glos CAT on Public Relations and worked with Gloucestershire County Council on New Business PR & Marketing issues.

Ray has carried out many major industry product launches and organised press conferences and press visits in the UK and abroad. He has organised sponsorship, award schemes, major national and international exhibitions. He is also skilled in literature production - in many languages, taking it from initial brief, through writing and design to final production.
